Tickets go on sale 24 October 2011.A new staging of this quintessential ballet is co-produced by Ethan Stiefel and Johan Kobborg, internationally acclaimed principal dancer of the Royal Ballet. Gillian Murphy, RNZB Principal Guest Artist and star of American Ballet Theatre, dances Giselle, one of the most dramatic roles in the classical ballet repertoire.

Disguise and revelation, love and jealousy combine in this tragic tale. A love story unfolds against the ghostly backdrop of a Rhineland forest haunted by the fearful presence of the “Wilis” – vengeful spirits of abandoned brides. The beautiful peasant girl, Giselle, falls for Albrecht who conceals his identity to win her. The discovery of her lover’s deception shatters Giselle’s innocence and causes her to die of a broken heart. Albrecht is thrown into the hands of the merciless Wilis, but Giselle cannot bear to watch him die and returns as a ghost to save him.

Giselle is the most dramatic and beautiful of ballets and RNZB’s brand new production is a must-see in 2012.

This is our annual Hot Red Hawke’s Bay event and it is as strong as ever. Welcome back to so many familiar faces that have made this event one of their annual “must see” events.Every year we bring over 20 of our wineries and showcase a minimum of 100 wines to wine and hospitality trade and media and the general public. It would be impossible to see this many Hawke’s Bay wines and talk to this many Hawke’s Bay winemakers in one day anywhere else.

We are now NZ’s biggest regional wine expo showing both red and white wines.

Hot Red Hawke’s Bay was established in 2004 to showcase the premium red wines from the region and to cement Hawke’s Bay’s reputation as the NZ ultra-premium red wine capital. Nine years on Hawke’s Bay has more than proven we own that title and felt the time had come to add the equally popular white wines to the mix.

Many of our wineries here today have been part of the event since its inception as Hot Red Hawke’s Bay is thoroughly enjoyed by the winemakers, wine trade and media and public alike. On-going awards and accolades for Hawke’s Bay red wines continue to flow for all varieties, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Hawke’s Bay blends and of course, Syrah. Hawke’s Bay still is the largest producer for all these varieties in the country.

Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay continues to grow and excel in showcasing winemakers styles across the region. Often underestimated but never disappointing we share over 20 from different producer today. Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Viognier and a couple of surprises are also represented for 2012.

Take the time and the opportunity to talk with our winery representatives and winemakers and discover more about what makes Hawke’s Bay wines so special.

The Solid Energy Tour
Ritchie - Diary of a Madman: Dedication to Shostakovich
Saint-Saëns - Piano Concerto No.5 Egyptian
Shostakovich - Symphony No.5

Andrew Litton - conductor
Stephen Hough - piano

Journey around the world with the NZSO.

Setting forth with a work from Christchurch composer Anthony Ritchie, his Diary of a Madman: Dedication to Shostakovich draws on the Russian composer’s youthful works.

Camille Saints-Saëns’s Piano Concerto No. 5 Egyptian is filled with allusions to rocking boats, croaking frogs and Nubian love songs. With filigree figures pouring forth from the soloist, Saints-Saëns’s music could be in no finer hands than those of pianist Stephen Hough. Stephen’s talents have been described as the ‘most perfect piano playing conceivable.’

Shostakovich’s epic Fifth Symphony, ‘A Soviet Artist's Practical, Creative Response to Just Criticism’, juxtaposes the naïve and the sardonic, triumph and despair, barbarism and elegiac beauty. His music declares an apparent patriotism while revealing sinister undercurrents.

Mendelssohn - Hebrides Overture
Elgar - Cello Concerto
Schumann - Symphony No. 4

Andrew Grams - conductor
Lynn Harrell - cello

Revel in the astonishing talent of cello superstar Lynn Harrell as he returns to perform one of the cello’s most beloved works – Elgar’s elegiac Cello Concerto.

You can hear the great crashing of waves against desolate rocks and almost feel a salty sea breeze rush past as you are swept away by the soaring melodies in Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture.

Schumann’s Fourth Symphony is equally dramatic. Dark and brooding yet filled with moments of triumphant defiance and exquisite beauty, Schumann’s music is transporting, bringing to a close a concert that will uplift and inspire you and leave you wanting more.
